  • Chartering (shipping)

Chartering is an activity within the shipping industry. In some cases a charterer may own cargo and employ a shipbroker to find a ship to deliver the cargo for a certain price, called freight rate. Freight rates may be on a per-ton basis over a certain route (e.g. for iron ore between Brazil and China), in Worldscale points (in case of oil tankers) or alternatively may be expressed in terms of a total sum - normally in U.S. dollars - per day for the agreed duration of the charter. A charterer may also be a party without a cargo who takes a vessel on charter for a specified period from the owner and then trades the ship to carry cargoes at a profit above the hire rate, or even makes a profit in a rising market by re-letting the ship out to other charterers. This video is targeted to blind...

http://indexicon.com/luxury-yacht-charter/super-yacht-charter/ Super yacht charter is increasing worldwide reflecting the growing popularity of using a opulent vessel as a vacation base. These vessels are targeted to meticulous individuals desiring incomparable levels of safety and comfort. Many also provide the ability to seamlessly mix pleasure with business. Yachts are used largely for pleasure and fun, either by their owners or by others via a chartering agreement. These agreements are effectively the marine equivalent of a land based property lease agreement. In the yacht market, they typically are a short term arrangement extending days or weeks, although longer periods are certainly possible. Mega and super yachts are labels used synonymously by many people. But chartering services draw a distinction based on length. Mega yachts lie from 30 up to 60 metres in length (that is, 98 to 197 feet). Super yachts are 60 metres and longer. If they get longer than 180 metres, they tend to be called ships rather than yachts. Most mega yachts and larger are motor powered; sailing craft in this class are rare. Most big yachts are supplied with their own skipper and crew. Bare boat agreements are uncommon in the large yacht class. The crew usually includes all engine room and deck hands and commonly a hostess, waiters and possibly also security professionals. All skippers and crew are training credentials to the highest standards and usually have several years of sea time experience as well. One point to remember is that larger yachts are not capable in entering some bays and marinas. Their berthing or along-side options are therefore more limited. This can be an issue for people with specific destinations they wish to visit that have a restricted vessel maneuvering area. Many owners are members of a nationally-based super yacht association. This body serves to represent the interests of the industry to government and other parties. In many cases, the association also serves to establish its home country as a preferred destination for the global fleet of large, luxury pleasure craft. In these instances, those associations can be a useful source of information for clients intending a super yacht charter to that country. - created at http://animoto.com

What is TRAMP TRADE? What does TRAMP TRADE mean? TRAMP TRADE meaning - TRAMP TRADE definition - TRAMP TRADE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A boat or ship engaged in the tramp trade is one which does not have a fixed schedule or published ports of call. As opposed to freight liners, tramp ships trade on the spot market with no fixed schedule or itinerary/ports-of-call(s). A steamship engaged in the tramp trade is sometimes called a tramp steamer; the similar terms tramp freighter and tramper are also used. Chartering is done chiefly on London, New York, Singapore shipbroking exchanges. The Baltic Exchange serves as a type of stock market index for the trade. The term tramper is derived from the British meaning of "tramp" as itinerant beggar or vagrant; in this context it is first documented in the 1880s, along with "ocean tramp" (at the time many sailing vessels engaged in irregular trade as well). The tramp trade first took off in Britain around the mid 19th century. The dependability and timeliness of steam ships was found to be more cost-effective than sail. Coal was needed for ships' boilers, and the demand created a business opportunity for moving large amounts of best Welsh coal to various seaports in Britain. Within a few years tramp ships became the workhorses of trade, transporting coal and finished products from British cities to the rest of the world. The size of tramp ships remained relatively constant from 1900 to 1940, at about 7,000 to 10,000 deadweight tons (dwt.). During the Second World War, the United States created the Liberty Ship; a single design that could be used to carry just about anything, which weighed in at 10,500 dwt. The U.S. produced 2,708 Liberty Ships and they were used on every international trade route. After the Second World War, economies of scale took over and the size of tramp ships exploded to keep up with a booming supply and demand cycle. During this time the bulk carrier became the tramp of choice for many owners and operators. The bulk carrier was designed to carry coal, grain and ore, which gave it more flexibility and could service more ports than some of its ancestors, which only carried a single commodity. Today the tramp trade includes all types of vessels, from bulk carriers to tankers. Each can be used for a specific market, or ships can be combined like the oil, bulk, ore carriers to accommodate many different markets depending where the ship is located and the supply and demand of the area. Tramp ships often carry with them their own gear (booms, cranes, derricks) in case the next port lacks the proper equipment for loading or discharging cargo. The tramp ship is a contract carrier. Unlike a liner, often called a common carrier, which has a fixed schedule and a published tariff, the ideal tramp can carry anything to anywhere, and freight rates are influenced by supply and demand. To generate business, a contract to lease the vessel known as a charter party is drawn up between the ship owner and the charterer. There are three types of charters, voyage, time and demise. Due to the explosion of liner services, and in large part, due to containerisation since the 1960s, the tramp trade has decreased, but is by no means forgotten. A contemporary trend in the shipping business called marketing mix has resulted in renewed interest in tramp shipping. To increase profits, liner companies are looking at investing into tramp ships to create a buffer when the market is down. For example, Mitsui OSK Lines possesses a large fleet with tramp ships and liners. With both types of shipping covered they are able to service a world economy even in a down market. The beauty of tramp ships is they are relied upon at a moment's notice to service any type of market. Even in a down economy there will be a market for some type of commodity somewhere and the company with the ships able to exploit that market will do better than the company relying on liner services alone.

Created by MGM for American President Lines, "Departure" shows the round-the-world cruise of the SS President Wilson from San Francisco to the Orient and Europe in the late 1940s. A few other ships that were part of American President Lines (APL) are briefly shown as well. The SS President Cleveland and SS President Wilson were shining symbols of post war American technology, design and style, with streamline moderne styling. After leaving San Francisco, at 8:00, the ship arrives in Honolulu, and there is footage of surfing, leis, Waikiki Beach, and more. At 9 minutes, the ship arrives in Japan, with images including modern Tokyo and ancient temples. At 11:00, scenes of Hong Kong are shown, with American President Lines offices shown. At 12:20, Manila is shown in the Philippines. The war memorial is shown at 13 minutes. Singapore is seen at 13:00. Rubber tree plantations are seen at 14 minutes. At 14:59, Bangkok, Thailand is seen. At 15:30, Bombay India is shown as well as the Taj Mahal. At 16:30, Cairo Egypt is seen. The film then shifts to continental Europe, with images of Italy and Pompeii at 17:00, Rome, Venice, Paris at 19:00, and then a cruise homeward at 19:00 with a farewell party thrown. The film features some photography by Alfred T. Palmer, a famous cameraman and still photographer who worked extensively with the Dollar Steamship Lines. SS President Wilson was an American passenger ship originally ordered by the Maritime Commission (MC hull 687) during World War II, as one of the Admiral W. S. Benson-class Type P2-SE2-R1 transport ships. The ship was laid down on 27 November 1944 and was launched on 24 November 1947, completed and delivered to the Maritime Commission on 27 April 1948. Under the name SS President Wilson, she was bareboat chartered by the Maritime Commission to American President Lines. She was eventually sold to Oceanic Cruise Development, Inc. in 1973, and renamed Oriental Empress. The ship was eventually scrapped in 1984 American President Lines restarted its round-the-world passenger service shortly after the end of WWII, and launched the SS President Cleveland and SS President Wilson in 1946, which were advertised as "your American hotel abroad." In the 1950s, the company again expanded, building more ships; 11 were built between 1952 and 1954. These included C-4 class cargo ships. Also, a settlement was finally reached in the Dollar case. Rather than the Dollar family taking back the company, it was sold to a group of investors led by Ralph K. Davies for $18.3 million. At this time Davies also acquired control of American Mail Line with the aim of reintegrating it into APL. The increasing use of air travel meant that the company's passenger services had steadily been declining throughout the 1960s, and by 1973, the last APL liner, the SS President Wilson, completed her final round-the-world trip and was sold off.
